Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Abraham Maslow was an American psychology professor at Alliant International University, Brandeis University, Brooklyn College, New School for Social Research and Columbia University: stressing the importance of focusing on the positive qualities in people as opposed to a “bag of symptoms”

Maslow wanted to understand what motivates people, he believed that individuals posses a set of motivation systems related to rewards or unconscious desires. Maslow stated that people are motivated to achieve certain needs and that some take presence over others. One must satisfy lower level deficit before progressing on to meet the higher level needs. The original hierarchy of needs includes:

  1. Biological/Physiological: air, food, drink, shelter warmth, sex and sleep
  2. Safety: protection from the elements, security, law, order and freedom from fear
  3. Love/Belonging: friendship, intimacy, affection and love
  4. Esteem: achievement, independence, respect, status and dominance
  5. Self Actualisation: realising potential, fulfilment and growth
